December Community day is the biggest event of the year and it's almost here! The event will span 2 days, the 12th and 13th of December, and run from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. To capitalize on everything that's happening during this event, you need to start preparing now, if you haven't already. Today I will go over some general tips for all community days, with the addition of some specific tips for this event. General Tips
Pokeballs! These events are all about catching, and you can't do that without pokeballs. Ideally, you want Great and Ultra, but regular pokeballs work too. Niantic has teased that they are making pokeballs more available from gifts and pokestops. So even if you have 0 balls right now you can go out and spin stops and still stock up enough for this Comm Day. I don't have a specific number of pokeballs I would recommend, but keep in mind that this is a two-day event so you'll need more than a regular Community Day.
You'll need storage to catch Pokemon with all the balls you're stocked up. For a regular Community Day, I would recommend about 500 storage. But this is no regular Comm Day. For this two-day behemoth, you'll want as much storage as you can afford. Of course, you can spend Saturday night going through your catches and transferring the ones you don't need, but you'll definitely want to catch as much as you can this event. With double stardust, and the new XL candy feature, and the extra XP from catching there's really no reason to not catch as much as you can. So I'm suggesting 800-1000 storage, or as close as you can get.
Pinap Berries are always useful. If you've played the other Comm Days throughout this, these might not be as important to you. But it's always a good idea to stock up on some of these for that extra candy. You can use them on just the Mons who's Comm Day you missed, or just the ones you want extra candy for. And if you don't end up using as much as you thought, you can always save them for January Comm Day. Unfortunately, Pinap Berries don't seem to increase the amount of XL candies you get, so be mindful of that. XL Candies are here! If you don't know, they are used to power up your Pokemon past level 40. Community Day is a great way to earn some, as you need 296 to get your Mons from level 40 to 50, and they can be a little rare. You're more likely to receive them from catching higher level Pokemon, so keep an eye out for high Cp spawns you come across. Since Pinaps don't work for getting XL candy, you can razz the high Cp Mons to guarantee you catch them. In my opinion, not all the spawns are worth catching for XL candy. I would recommend good raid attackers or master league Mons. My priorities will be Rhyhorn, Gastly, Magikarp, Charmander, Electabuzz, and Seedot for Ultra League. Bonuses

There’ll be a special one-time-purchase December Community Day Box available for 1,280 PokéCoins featuring 30 Ultra Balls, five Lucky Eggs, one Elite Fast TM, and one Elite Charged TM.
Event-exclusive Timed Research will be available! By completing Timed Research tasks, you’ll be able to earn an Elite Charged TM and other rewards.
For US$1 (or the equivalent pricing tier in your local currency), you’ll be able to access the December Community Day–exclusive Special Research story.
x2 Catch Stardust is HUGE! During the Charmander Community Day when this same bonus was active, I got nearly 600,000 stardust. I am definitely looking forwards to going hard and cracking 1,000,000 over the two days. If you want to really maximize on stardust, you'll want to learn the quick catch method. You can use your Great and Ultra balls to make sure you catch on the first throw, in addition to throwing excellents. Excellent throws are worth 2000xp right now, so there is lots of incentive to learn how to throw them every time. Start practicing now!
Half Egg hatch distance is always a great bonus. 2019 community day Pokemon will be hatching from 2kms during this event, and the only other way to get them is to do raids. So if you're not looking to spend your life savings on raid passes for an adequate amount of these Mons, walking is the way to go. I know I'll be walking all day to try and clutch up a shiny Mudkip. I got my first and only during Go Fest this year, so I would love another one of those purple cuties.
Incense is a must-have on Community days and the 3-hour duration helps a crazy amount. To have incense on for the whole event, both days, you'll need 4, which isn't too bad at all. Unfortunately, they aren't available in the Comm Day box that will be available, so if you don't have 4 you'll need to buy them straight-up or from the Special, Ultra, and Adventure Boxes that are available in the store. The $1 special research might have some as a reward, but it's either that or go without. Mega Gengar will be in raids during the event on Saturday, and Mega Charizard X on Sunday. If you're like me and played the Charmander Community Day and Halloween Event, then you'll already have more than enough Mega Energy. Plus, I never like doing raids during Comm Days as it takes away from catching those shinies. But if you need the energy, or want to go for a shiny or hundo, they are available.
Exclusive attacks are really the highlight of Community Days. They can bring a new Mon into the Go battle league, such as Beedrill with Drill Run, or Gengar with Shadow Punch. Or they can make a good raid attacker into a great one, like with Rhyperior with Rock Wrecker. There are too many Mons and Moves to go in-depth with each one, but if you want to try out one of these Mons in the Go Battle league, I recommend heading over to pvpoke.com and seeing if the special move is any good on it. Niantic has made the decision to not include 2018 exclusive moves in this event, but have teased that they will be available in other ways during 2021, so DO NOT evolve your 2018 Comm Day Mons this event! The Community Day Box is always a staple in these events. They include items to help with the Comm Day grind, as well as an Elite Tm. If you're like most and don't think a single Elite Tm is worth $14+ CAD, this one might be a little more with it since it includes two, an Elite Charged and an Elite Fast Tm. The box also comes with 30 Ultra balls, which isn't the best, but it helps, and five Lucky Eggs. I'm excited about the Lucky Eggs, since a 4000 XP Excellent throw is absolutely crazy! I'll be playing with a Lucky Egg on for most, if not the whole event.
A $1 special research will also be available in the shop. These usually offer mediocre rewards for slow and expensive tasks like transfer 10 Pokemon, and Power up Pokemon 10 times. They can get you an extra shiny though if you're into that, and possibly a couple of incense if you need them. Finally, there will be a timed research available. You'll definitely want to complete this before the event is over since it rewards an Elite Charged Tm. The main way to get an Elite Tm is to buy the expensive Comm Day Box, so you don't want to miss out on a free one. The announcement said there will be other rewards for these tasks, and my guess is the evolve items, such as Sinnoh Stones and Upgrades. You'll need these to evolve some of the Mons in this event for the exclusive attack so I can't see them not being included as rewards in this event.
