Exert Warriors has been a deck that I have been playing since Amonkhet was in Standard. It can be a very explosive aggro deck when all the parts are moving and is very consistent. The main focus of the deck is to give our warriors with the exert ability vigilance to ignore the downside of staying tapped every other turn and then beating down the opponent with the full power these warriors have to offer. Unfortunately, Zendikar Rising didn't bring any new editions to the warrior squad, but I am interested in Resolute Strike. A equipment heavy version of this deck in the future sounds like a lot of fun.
Giving Vigilance
Herald of Dromoka is our most important card in the deck. We can be cast for one mana thanks to Brighthearth Banneret and play an exert threat like Oketra's Avenger. Marshaling Cry is what makes the deck nice and consistent. We can cast it when we need vigilance right away, or we can cycle it when we already have Herald of Dromoka in play. We can also flashback it as a late-game finisher if we need that extra gas.
Exert Creatures
We have exert creatures all the way up the curve and are all-powerful threats in their own right. Oketra's Avenger is a hyper-aggressive menace if it can exert every turn, and is miserable for opponents in combat. Khenra Scrapper is dangerous as well, especially when it gets haste from Bloodlust Inciter. A large hasty menace creature is nothing to laugh at and is one of our best creatures when in a damage race. Tah-Crop Elite is our makeshift lord and a great finisher. It pumps the team when it attacks which spirals out of control when combined with Marshaling Cry. It can come down and end the game if given haste and the opponent doesn't expect it.
Rest of the Curve
Brighthearth Banneret is quietly one of the best creatures in the deck. A lot of our fastest starts only work with it on turn two. It can help us dump our hand quickly or allow us to operate a turn ahead. Aven Skirmisher is a decent aggressive creature and it picks up Bonesplitter better than our other one drops. Bloodlust Inciter gives our big threats haste and it can help us explode onto the battlefield as we discussed earlier. It doesn't look threatening on its own and it usually just sits on the battlefield as our opponent is more concerned about our follow up play. Law-Rune Enforcer is an extra bit of interaction against big creatures that want to block our stuff and it can also slow down the Gurmag Angler that is trying to race us. Law-Rune Enforcer doesn't cover Delver of Secrets but I loved using this card in standard.
Removal
A nice two/two split between these cards. Lightning Bolt takes out cheap annoying creatures like Delver and Journey to Nowhere is our catch-all. Nothing fancy but these cards get the job done.
Exert Warriors in Pauper is super fun and easy to pilate. It is the deck I lend to friends when they want to try the format and is a fun starting point for new players. I hope you enjoyed the deck and check out our top 10 list of Standard cards from Zendikar Rising that is also being published today. We will also be releasing our lists for Modern and Pauper throughout the week. To make sure you don't miss any of those follow us on social media to stay up to date and join the fellowship. Have an awesome day!
