The Ultra Premier Cup has incredible depth with a variety of viable options and the pool of playable Pokémon gets even bigger if you're willing to invest in some XL mons. Today we'll be going through some of my favorite teams from other content creators and some pretty meta teams that I think are a lot of fun. If you're mostly a Great League player but are looking to enter the Ultra League, then hopefully some of these teams speak to you and can give them a go yourself. Lastly, a quick disclaimer, we'll be showing the rankings without the inclusion of XL Pokémon because some are very difficult to obtain so they will show up rarely in your sets. As always we'll be heading to pvpoke.com for all of the ratings and match up information. Team 1
Earlier this week Zyonik posted this spicy but very glassy team. Gengar and Blaziken put out a lot of damage but are very squishy no matter what league you bring them to. If you like playing fast pace and "risking it for the biscuit" then this team should be a lot of fun. Gengar is a very strong lead with lots of positive match us across the meta. Shadow Claw is a dominant fast move and pairs well with Shadow Punch to put pressure on shields, but note that you basically always need to spend a shield to win switch advantage in most situations. Sludge Bomb is here for coverage against charmers and for heavy neutral damage against Venusaur. Shadow Ball is still a hard-hitting move but you miss out on that coverage. Blaziken isn't the best partner for Gengar but it does cover the steels such as Magenzone and Escavalier that Gengar struggles with. Blaziken has a diverse move pool with Brave Bird and Stone Edge adding valuable coverage. Stone Edge is going to cost you an Elite Charged TM so you can opt to run Blaze Kick for shield baiting and Blast Burn for massive damage. Kingdra is super resilient with the Dragon and Water typing, offering a decent amount of resistances. This makes Kingdra a fantastic safe switch option and we can apply a lot of fast move pressure with Dragon Breath. Team 2
Once upon a time, people would avoid doubling up on typing across their team, but lately, lots of people have been stacking their backline with Pokémon that share a typing. The logic here is to draw out the biggest counter to your back two Pokémon once you switch in from a lead loss. This is another Zyonik team from a while back and I found myself coming back to it now. Gallade and Empoleon make a strong core and putting another steel in the back in Magnezone makes it hard for most teams to compete in the end game. Steel is a tough typing to deal with in every league and having two means your opponent is unlikely to have multiple counters. Gallade is a powerful lead with outstanding coverage with Confusion to charge up Leaf Blade and Close Combat. Empoleon is a decent safe switch with Waterfall hitting very hard alongside Hydro Cannon and Drill Peck to cover Grass types. Magnezone is a deadly closer with Wild Charge smashing through a lot of Pokemon. Once we draw out their best counter with Empoleon then Magnezone should be free to Wild Charge through the rest of the opposing team. Team 3
Nothing too fancy here, just a strong team across the board with meta Pokémon. Swampert is the most important starter in the game with a strong presence no matter the league or meta. Mud Shot can build up Hydro Cannon very quickly, making Swampert super deadly if you can get ahead on energy. Sludge Bomb rounds out the move set and gives us a hard answer for grass types, or heavy neutral damage in match ups when Hydro Cannon is resisted. Dragonite helps cover grass types in Venusaur and the dragon typing gives it the resistances it needs to be a strong closer. Dragon Breath adds heavy pressure in the late game and Dragon Claws coming out fairly quick. Hurricane is a move that the opponent needs to respect unless they can resist the damage and this will help you close the game. Snorlax is the thickest boy around and is always a solid safe switch with all of that bulk. Lick is a very strong fast move and Body Slam spam will claim shields even if you swap into a neutral match up. My favorite aspect of Snorlax is the coverage it has with charge moves. Superpower is fantastic at dealing with steel types which is why we're running it, but Earthquake is a strong move as well. Team 4
Triple starter strategies have always had their place in the meta and this is the composition I decided to go with. Charizard is a very solid lead with Dragon Claw spam and Blast Burn threatening heavy damage. Venusaur is still one of the absolute best Pokémon in the Premier Cup if you discount XL options. Vine Whip into Frenzy Plant puts pressure on shields and Sludge Bomb hits for heavy neutral damage on a wide part of the meta. In the back we have Empoleon and you could definitely run Swampert if you have one. Waterfall puts out that fast move pressure alongside Hydro Cannon, and you always want that Drill Peck for coverage. Starters mesh together very well with them covering a good chunk of each other's weaknesses. This is also a relatively budget team with all of the second charge moves only costing 10k stardust.
Those are our four teams that I would recommend for the Ultra Premier Cup. Team one has you covered if you play fast and furious with a kick of spice, and Kingdra is a worthwhile investment in the long run. If you want a strong lead with tons of resilience in the back, then team two has a lot to offer. Team three will add a lot of value to your pvp roster as the Pokémon are all meta threats and will be key pieces in any future teams. The most available and budget friendly option is definitely the fourth team. Most people have starters in their collection and you can't go wrong with the 10k dust cost for those second charge moves. So put together your best starter squad to takeover the Premier Cup. I hope very much that this article was useful and that you enjoyed the teams we presented.
