The Halloween Cup will be the first Silph style cup brought to everyone in Pokemon Go. It is also an opportunity for Pokemon that are normally afterthoughts in the open Great League to truly shine. The Halloween Cup will surely be an exciting week of battling and Fellowship Games is here to make sure your Pokemon are ready for an epic week of battling. Today we'll go over the top-ranked Pokemon for the Halloween Cup in a brief refresher of the beat the box concept. We'll also provide three teams to give an idea of what you can expect heading into the Cup.
Meta Breakdown
Mandibuzz has risen to the top of the ranks for the Halloween Cup and has even overthrown Azumarill since its debut. Mandibuzz has an impactful moveset with Foul Play targeting the Ghost types and Air Slash plus Aerial Ace being super effective against the Bug types. Snarl is another fast move option if you want to prioritize energy gain which you could then pair this with Shadow Ball to close out the game once shields are down.
Galvantula has recently risen in the ranks of the open Great League with the addition of Lunge to its move set. Galvantula is a serious player with Volt Switch as a very hard-hitting fast move that also charges moves very quickly. Discharge goes after Azumarill and anything that has a Flying subtype like Mandibuzz and Golbat. Lunge has completely replaced Bug Buzz and is the best answer for those dark types.
Azumarill is the G.O.A.T of the open Great League was the number one ranked Pokemon for the Halloween Cup before the arrival of Mandibuzz. Azumarill's fantastic bulk and versatile move set is a staple of any cup it's in and having a Fairy typing gives it resistance to Dark types. It has access to Ice Beam to cover fliers and Hydro Pump provides heavy neutral damage. Play Rough is another fantastic option as it is the best move in the Azumarill mirror and deals super-effective damage to Dark types.
Beedrill and Shadow Beedrill make up ranks 4 and 5 but regardless of which one you have, they will both do amazing jobs at countering Azumarill and run on the lead to put out lots of damage. Poison Jab is a serious threat to Fairy Pokemon and X-Scissor takes out Dark types, while Drill Run offers coverage to other Poison types or to take out an Alolan Marowak.
Team 1
Gengar on the lead is a powerful option that can spam Shadow Punch to get shields early and then switch out to come back in later to finish with Shadow Ball. Azumarill covers the Dark types like Umbreon that are the biggest threats to our Gengar. Crustle is a fantastic safe switch option that can cover Mandibuzz, Galvantula, and Beedrill. It also has close matches against Dark types like Umbreon and Zweilous for when we lose lead.
Team 2
Swalot is an interesting Pokemon to utilize in the Halloween Cup as it is unused in the open Great League. Swalot aims to catch that Azumarill on the lead and can pressure Mandibuzz with Ice Beam. Alolan Marowak helps cover against the bug types that Swalot struggles with like Beedrill and Galvantula. We also have our own Galvantula as the safe switch and can deal with high ranked closers like Mandibuzz and Azumarill.
Team 3
A fairly straight forward team with Great League staples Azumarill and Umbreon, which are Pokemon you should be familiar with. Beedrill great at putting out damage on the lead and Umbreon can come in when you lose the lead. Azumarill is also relatively safe to switch into but is a fantastic closer. Just make sure you've safely taken out and poison type attackers out early on. Azumarill has serious bulk to withstand the late game making your opponent struggle to finish it off, all while having the move set to close out the game against most Pokemon in the Cup.
