Jeskai Yorion Fires in Pioneer

Updated: Nov 10, 2020

Fires of Invention has been banned in both Standard and Historic, but in Pioneer the flames of the forge still burn strong. Lukka, Coppercoat Outcast has been problematic in Standard and Historic with Agent of Treachery. This list is moving away from Lukka and is trying to be fair. Focusing on clearing the board and blinking Planeswalkers with Yorion, Sky Nomad.

Fires of Invention is still fantastic and is the powerhouse of this deck. Being able to play Fires of Invention into Supreme Verdict both on turn four clears the board and sets up your engine moving forward. Even being able to fetch Yorion from your sideboard and play it on the same turn for free later in the game is another nice little trick. Fires of Invention also allows us to save our lands to activate Castle Vantress on our opponents end step or activate Omen of the Sea.

Win Conditions

Instead of playing Lukka, Coppercoat Outcast, and Agent of Treachery to start stealing our opponent's cards and make them absolutely miserable; instead we're looking to pull ahead with Inspired Ultimatum and then win by attacking with sharks from Shark Typhoon or dragons from Sarkhan, the Masterless. Fires of Invention helps put Shark Typhoon into play to start making sharks as you're casting Planeswalkers. Sarkhan, the Masterless is very deadly on a board with three or four Planeswalkers on it and could win the game on the spot. Chandra, Awakened Inferno emblems also do work during games that stall out.

Planeswalkers

The Planeswalker package is the bread and butter of the deck. They give us something to do every turn to get around the drawback of Fires of Invention. Narset, Parter of Veils, and Teferi, Time Raveler both have oppressive static abilities that stop your opponents from drawing cards and from interacting on your turn. Narset, Parter of Veil's -2 helps us find more cards to use with Fires of Invention or to keep making tokens with Shark Typhoon. Teferi slows the game down by bouncing threats and allows us to play wraths at instant speed. This makes Teferi a must-answer threat for creature decks with us being able to hold up mana for the Supreme Verdict when they are building their board. Narset of the Ancient Way is a card I personally love. It draws cards, gains life, makes mana, and can be removal. I like being able to throw copies of extra of Fires of Invention at creatures when they would otherwise be dead. Elspeth, Sun's Champion, and Chandra, Awakened Inferno are also pet picks. They both have minus abilities that act as extra sweepers against certain creatures. Even in older formats like Modern, Elspeth, Sun's Champion dominates the battlefield when it resolves. It can win the game by itself if it goes unanswered.

Board Wipes

Having strong sweepers help facilitate our Planeswalkers by giving them an empty board to stay on. Anger of the Gods is necessary for a meta with so many sacrifice and graveyard synergies. Supreme Verdict is the best unconditional sweeper in the format and has the bonus of not getting countered. The deck has targeted removal in Baffling End, Oath of Chandra, and Elspeth Conquers Death, but the deck really does rely on wraths to keep the planeswalkers safe.

The Rest of the Curve

The rest of the curve are good control cards that work well with Fires of Invention and Yorion, Sky Nomad. Drawn from Dreams is a powerful card advantage spell to play off of Fires of Invention. Omen of the Sea is a great cantrip and has an activated ability to use our mana and is the best blink target with Yorion if we're looking for something specific. The Birth of Meletis ramps us and can be blinked with Yorion.

Sideboard

The sideboard package is some pretty basic stuff. Dovin's Veto and Mystical Dispute for other control decks, an extra Anger of the Gods for small creature decks and sacrifice decks, Rest in Peace for graveyard decks, Aether Gust for green threats, Sorcerous Spyglass for shutting down Planeswalkers, and Teyo, the Shieldmage for protection against burn spells and Thoughtseize.

Inspired Ultimatum and Narset of the Ancient Way were the cards I was most excited for back when Ikoria was released. Fires of Invention is also a card that I enjoy playing when it isn't being broken. I hope the deck sparked some interest whether you decide to run it yourself or not.
