The Love Cup is the most recent themed cup to come to the Go Battle League and will be running from Monday, February 8 to Monday, February 15, 2021, alongside the Master League. The event will only allow Pokémon that are red or pink and are within the 1500cp limit. The Love Cup looks like a lot of fun and will have familiar faces from open Great League, but we'll also see some exciting new options emerge that normally don't see any play. Today we'll be going through the meta to help us form a deeper understanding and we'll offer three teams that you can use to have success in the Love Cup. As always we'll be using pvpoke.com for all of the rankings and simulations
As you can see we have a lot of moving parts but it is important to see how they fit together. Charizard is ranked the highest as a lead so expect to see it often in the front and is one of the best answers to Wigglytuff and Clefable. Alomomola is a very strong pick and reminds me of Hypno in the Kanto Cup in terms of bulk and raw stat output. From lead to closer Alomomola is a strong pick and needs to be a consideration in your team building. Be prepared to see it on the lead or have a plan to deal with it in the back towards the end game. Charmers are obnoxious in every league and are serious threats in the Love Cup. They add great coverage as they actually beat a huge chunk of the meta that isn't included in the graphic above. Be prepared for these to swap in and make sure to have a counter for them on any team you make. Anything that doesn't resist the Charm damage outright, runs the risk of getting deleted. Those are the Pokemon that I think will define the Love Cup meta with some other picks such as Medicham and Scrafty as Counter users, Wormadam Trash to counter the Charmers, and Shadow Vileplume to spread the same oppressive Razor Leaf wrath as the Dark Lord Shadow Victreebel. This cup appears to be fast move focused with all of these heavy-hitting moves and not too many Pokemon with the bulk to withstand the pressure. Team 1
Core breakers are very important players in any meta as they can break apart the teams that are running any combination of the highest-ranked mons. Magcargo is a great example as it catches Charizard on the lead hard with Rock Throw, but the opponent can't safe swap into their Clefable as we resist Fairy types, so we force them to switch in with something like Alomomola or Medicham. The rest of the team is meant to capitalize on this with Electrode and Wigglytuff to handle this. Electrode is a very deadly closer if we can get ahead on energy with Volt Switch and lines up against that Alomomola perfectly. Wigglytuff is the charmer of choice for this team and gives the team some solid coverage and a reliable safe swap. Team 2
This team is hella meta with Medicham on the lead. You have to stay clear of Charizard with Wing Attack and the Charmers, but it does deal with Alomomola and Shadow Vileplume. Alomomola is our tank in the back with Waterfall damage-dealing a lot of damage in the late game and has the bulk to take charge moves without needing shields. Clefable is on the safe switch here as I really do think that the Charmers will be the best safe switch options. Not too much to say for this team but I do think the Medicham and Clefable will add plenty of coverage to protect us from core breakers and other spice picks in the meta. Team 3
Scizor is one of the few steel types in the meta and will do its best work against the Charmers. When you're not slam dunk catching those Fairy leads you do need to look out for a few things. Charizard, XL Medicham, and Alomomola will give you problems on the lead but you do win out against Shadow Vileplume, and Shadow Charizard if you catch them. Alomomola is again our closer and will help us against those Charizard threats that wreck Scizor. Electrode is a great core breaker and will pick apart the Charizard and Alomomola core on the safe switch.
If you want to learn everything about the Love Cup then head over to our YouTube channel where we'll be posting a podcast episode dedicated to breaking down all of our other picks and teams. The video will be up by Sunday so that you can give it a listen before the Love Cup goes live. We'll also be streaming these teams, and others over on Twitch so follow the channel if you want to see some pvp content. Thanks for reading this article, and for joining the Fellowship! Best of luck to you in the Love Cup!
