Pokemon Go Flying Cup Team Guides

Updated: Nov 10, 2020

The Flying Cup is a Silph Road style event that will happen on Thursday, September 24 and it is a league with only flying type Pokemon allowed. This is an exciting opportunity for Pokemon that can't usually compete in the open Great League, such as Aerodactyl, to have a chance to shine. Today we'll be going through three teams that I think will do well in the Flying Cup and offer some insight into how the teams will function overall.

Team One

Mantine and Gligar are an amazing core with Mantine being double weak to electric types and Gligar resisting them. Mantine is an exceptionally annoying lead by spamming Bubble Beam to debuff the opponent and Ice Beam to apply serious pressure. Emolga is the best safe switch option by covering threats like Skarmory and Aerodactyl, while only having one key loss to Gligar. This makes Emolga the undisputed best switch option in the entire cup. Gligar has access to Nigh Slash for great neutral damage but the other options of Aerial Ace and Dig are very poor. The best option we have is to get return on a purified Gligar.

Team Two

Aerodactyl is one of the more exciting Pokemon to utilize in the Flying Cup. Rock Throw absolutely destroys Articuno and Zapdos, as well as punishing anyone running Charizard. The downside to Aerodactyl is that it has very poor coverage because it runs triple rock moves. Skarmory is the biggest threat alongside Gligar so we have Mantine to cover those. Drifblim is a fantastic safe switch with Hex charging Shadow Ball very quickly which hits hard in a lot of neutral matches. Icy Wind is outstanding as well for matches we lose as it reduces our opponent's attack to make them throw more energy.

Team Three

Articuno is another Icy Wind user, and like Mantine is a very annoying lead. Articuno is very weak to Skarmory and Aerodactyl which is why we have Emolga for cover. Skarmory is a great safe switch as it has a lot of favorable matchups thanks to its steel typing. Skarmory has access to Sky Attack to pressure shields and Brave Bird as a late-game bomb to close out the game. This team is quite expensive with Articuno being a legendary and Skarmory has an expensive unlock costs for its second charge move. Emolga has a cheap unlock cost but is rare so it is a challenge to get enough candies.

The Flying Cup is looking to be a lot of fun and gives trainers a chance to play some Pokemon they otherwise wouldn't play. What Pokemon are you most excited to use? I'm personally hoping to see some Salamence beat-downs from other trainers in the community. Today was a double article drop so if you're a Magic: The Gathering player go check out our top five Modern cards from Zendikar Rising article.
