The Scarab God EDH Guide

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

EDH has been the last thing on my mind recently with our current pandemic situation sucking the joy out of everything, including my ability to play Commander. However, Commander Legends printed a handful of cards to make one of my favorite decks absolutely disgusting. When I'm not comboing off with Prossh, Skyraider of Kher and Food Chain, I like to Eternalize endless amounts of zombies to drain the rest of the table out of the game. So today we'll be entering the space of EDH for the first time on the website to do a deep dive into my Scarab God Zombie deck. We'll also be doing a video deck tech on our YouTube Channel tomorrow so go check that out for the full scoop.

New Cards

As you can see this deck gained a lot from Commander Legends. Sphinx of the Second Sun is a better version of Paradox Haze by giving us an extra upkeep trigger with The Scarab God, but has the added bonus of allowing get an extra draw step, and giving us another untap step. The is huge by allowing us to essentially double our mana every turn as we can keep casting spells post-combat. This also allows us to keep up all of our mana for more eternalizing during other players' turns. Eligeth, Crossroads Augur turn our upkeep trigger scrying into straight-up card draw which could allow us to take over the game. Both of these awesome new Sphinx cards make for excellent targets for us to Eternalize. Hullbreacher is freakin' insane! Everyone is putting some sort of card advantage package in their deck and this not only stops it but gives us treasure to crack for mana, and it has Flash! Imagine playing this out in response to a Blue Sun's Zenith and getting a board full of treasure as the opponent gets nothing but rage and disappointment. Tormod, the Desecrator might as well have been made for this deck. With it in play, we get an extra 2/2 Zombie each time we eternalize and gives us some value if the opponent exiles the graveyard. Depending on the board state our opponents might not be able to deal with the army of Zombies we would get from losing our graveyard. Infinite Combo

In our playgroup, we have at least one infinite combo in every deck to ensure the occasional quick when so that games don't drag on. The isn't the most straightforward combo but depending on what pieces you have you can get infinite mana, card draw, and drain triggers. The core of the combo is Rooftop Storm, Gravecrawler, a sac outlet, and one other zombie. For sac outlets you want Phyrexian Altar to generate mana but Carrion Feeder works as well, but you always need Rooftop Storm. If you have Gravecrawler and Plague Belcher, with Rooftop Storm and Phyrexian Altar you can sac Gravecrawler with the Altar and then cast it from the graveyard for free thanks to Rooftop Storm. With this, you will mana infinite mana with Altar and drain everyone out of the game with Belcher. If you have Kindred Discovery then you draw infinite times. Bontu's Monument is another way to drain everyone as you cast Gravecrawler over and over again. It isn't the most reliable combo but in the mid-game, you could piece it together thanks to all of the scrying from The Scarab God. Tutors

We have quite a few tutors to get any card we need and to get our most powerful options into our graveyard for our Commander. Corpse Connoisseur and Entomb fetch creatures into the graveyard, and we have Buried Alive as the best version of this as it fetches three creatures. Sidisi, Undead Vizier is a pure tutor that can get any card and we can use it twice by Exploiting herself and then eternalizing her for another trigger. Stocking up the graveyard with our most powerful options is very important and allows the deck to run smoothly. If you're interested in a more in-depth overview of the deck then check out our video over YouTube Channel where I'll be going through all of the cards in full detail. My goal here is to make this a quick read and also giving the option for a more detailed explanation if you want more than just the decklist. Let us know if you want more Commander content in the future if you're looking to discuss anything MTG then jump in our Discord. We're really trying to get some conversations going in the Magic Chat so hop in and let us know about any decks that you're working on. We're also streaming on Twitch so make sure to follow us there and on Instagram to stay up to date with our schedule. Thanks for reading and joining the Fellowship.
