Time to Party in Standard

Party is a mechanic that got very little attention due to the power of Omnath, Locus of Creation when Zendikar Rising was released. Standard is full of space to explore so maybe this DnD inspired mechanic can do some work in Standard. Today we'll be taking a journey into the Belly of the Beast to eat pancakes and hang with the Chief Party Pat to discuss this deck that is totally excellent. Some quick credit to Jim Davis for giving me the foundation of the deck.

Party Hosts

Archpriest of Iona is usually early to the party on turn one and gets bigger the more members you have. It becomes a threat in its own right by giving target creature +1/+1 and flying until end of turn, if you have a full party. Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate helps protect our party goers by making it so target creature an opponent controls can't attack or block, and it can't use activated abilities when we have a full party. Alongside being a 3/3 flying threat, Linvala can save the party by giving our creatures Hexproof or Indestructible if our opponent decides to be a party pooper. Squad Commander kicks the party into full gear by giving us a 1/1 Kor Warrior for each creature in our party. Combat becomes impossible for the opponent to handle when we have a full party and our team gets +1/+0 and indestructible with Squad Commander. Leaving us free to break dance all over the opponent's face. Tazri, Beacon of Unity is a nice payoff and comes down for the cheap if we have a full party, Her activated ability keeps the party going all night by looking six cards into our library and gets us two more partiers.

Party Animals

Stonework Packbeast is a one beast party and turns on all of our party synergies single-handedly. Without the Packbeast you aren't truly partying, you move to music but that's not dancing, you chew pancakes but you're not tasting, to truly party one must leave behind the problems that are troubling, and open ones' mind-eye. Or just make sure you're playing Stonework Packbeast. It is important for the deck to balance the different party members so for Rogues we have Robber of the Rich and Brazen Borrower. Robber is a hasty threat that can snag us some extra cards when we're behind on cards, while Borrower is a piece of interaction and a 3/1 flying threat. For Warriors, we have Seasoned Hallowblade and Fireblade Charger, as well as Winota which we'll get to in a bit. Hallowblade is a nice aggressive threat that we can protect by pitching extra cards to, and Fireblade Charger gives us another one drop with a nice death trigger. I am considering running a couple of copies of Luminarch Aspirant to gives us another Cleric.

Party Games

Concerted Defense is a Force Spike at its floor and then insane when you have a full party. Journey to Oblivion is solid removal and doesn't require that many party members to make it good. Just two partiers makes this a Banishing Light, and that is a card worth playing. We also have Kabira Takedown for extra removal from the flex slots of our mana base. Nothing too crazy here but all of these cards can do their jobs efficiently once the party is going and will be sure to make your opponent's nausea full-blown.

Winota, Joiner of Parties

Winota is capable of being the best card in Standard if we have the right creatures to pair her with. She also makes almost any pile of creatures into something actually capable of winning and she really adds so power to this deck. We have a variety of non-Human creatures to attack with to trigger her, and then a good amount of Humans to cheat into play tapped and attacking. Winota is insane when you can trigger it two or three times in one turn and can win the game on the spot. We also have a single Embercleave just because I doubt the opponent will expect it and it is another way to end the game on the spot.

Sideboard

For the sideboard, we have Practiced Tactics for some more Party based interaction. Drannith Magistrate is our best card against Adventure decks and has three toughness to avoid Stomp. It is also a Wizard to add to the Party. Glass Casket is solid creature removal and Mystical Dispute for some play against control. Shredded Sails is fantastic at dealing with fliers and can blow up a Great Henge. Mythos of Vadron is insane for grindy matchups and is honestly more insane than you realize until you cast it. Outlaws' Merriment is awesome when we get hit with a board wipe by pumping out a random Party member every turn. Spoils of Adventure is another source of card advantage and also gains us life if we need to stabilize.

Now that we've drunk our honey-flavored energy drinks and sang our favorite songs on the karaoke machine, it's time to get back to the party. Party Pat thanks you for reading and asks that you to follow us on Instagram to stay up to date on our streaming schedule on Twitch.
